I was really fascinated by Vera Molnars “Trapèzes penchés à droit” (1987/88) because of the enormous visual variability achieved by the simplicity of arranging red trapezes. The four different collages were like an invitation to me, saying: Come and play with us! While trying different formations I realized that it was a good idea to create all elements with the same height. This eases finding an arrangement that pleases the eye and is like the red colour a strong connecting element. Vera did her collages with cuts of red tape and writes the fact that the tape has a standardizes width adds to the regularity of the creation – so true. While Vera did create a new line out of the trapezes, for me it was more interesting to experiment with the relationships between the elements: how much space should be between them? How does it feel to bring them in static formation vs. in a more dynamic flow? Each element has an individual shape, is unique, and is through all the similarities (height, colour and material) connected to the others. The question came to mind if it’s possible to find arrangements that depict constellations of different groups and their individuals, such as a family, people on a dancefloor, a parade,… I guess I have got to try this – and keep playing a little more! 🙂
